Q&A From Your Recent Emails

Thanks so much for emailing questions – it’s a nice break from coming up with topics! Over the past few days I’ve gotten a few emails that I have not been able to answer, so I figured I do it here, for all to see.  If I forget any, please let me know!

Q:  What supplements do you take to help your hair grow?

A:   I take something called Pro-Collagen from www.benuts.com.  It’s my doctor’s vitamin shop.  I can’t say if it’s for sure if it’s working or not, but I think it is.

Q:  Do you take a daily multivitamin or any supplements?

A:  I take two supplements to help heal my adrenal gland, the aforementioned Pro-Collagen, a probiotic, a multi, and a Vitamin D.  I’m planning to talk about pro-biotics in the near future, but let me just say that they were pretty instrumental in healing my body, and I believe they are crucial for a healthy digestive system.  The kind I take, Natren Healthy Trinity, is pretty expensive but was recommended several times to me.  I’ve only been taking the multi for a couple of months now.  Before I was sick, I only took Flintstones.  I started taking this one at the same time as I started taking my Vitamin D, so I can’t say which one or both is working, but I definitely have more energy!  I began taking D because a blood test showed I was lacking it, which is weird because I am such a sun worshipper!  To those who don’t know me, I am quite possibly the whitest human to walk the Earth.

My boys. Aren't they cute?!

Q:  What vitamins do the girls take?

A:  They always took Flintstones until I realized it had dye in it.  When Kathleen has something with red dye in it, it makes her act drunk.  Like, “I love you, man” drunk/hyper.  I’m not kidding.  If you want to hear a funny/scary story ask me to tell you the Valentine’s Day party ’09 story.  It’s a doozy.  Years ago, before I knew anything about food, I told someone how odd she would get, and they said “Oh yeah, it’s probably the Red 40″.  I had no idea that there were a whole group of people who reacted like that to that substance.  Google it.  I did, and here was one of the first pages I found.  I loved the comments on it, too.   When I told my vitamin guy that I wanted some dye-free vitamins for the girls, he was like, “why would I sell vitamins with dye in them?”  I told him I had a very hard time finding ones without it, but I don’t have to look any further because they just LOVE these ones!  They have a probiotic, too, so they take that, as well.

They LOVE these!

Q:  Sell me on the Vitamix.  Do you still do the green smoothies?

A:  I think you are one of the only people in the tri-state area who has not been to my home for a demo.  Just come over.  You’ll fall in love.  I am 100% not exaggerating when I tell you that I use it at least three times a day.  I don’t do the green smoothies, but everyone else I know does.  You will be amazed at the healthy, fresh foods your kids will consume when it comes out of this thing.  I use it to:

  • make my morning protein smoothie with hidden frozen broccoli in it
  • make nut butters (throw nuts, some oil and a dash of salt in and you’ll have the best peanut or whatever kind of butter you want). Check the ingredients on your current peanut butter.  The second ingredient on mine was sugar.  Why?
  • dice my fruits and veggies
  • make hot cocoa (milk, cocoa powder, cinnamon, stevia) – that’s right, it heats things up, too
  • make fresh soups (you will never have a veggie go bad again, because you can always make something with it in this thing
  • grind toppings for our food – i.e. walnuts for oatmeal
  • make the best salsa ever, plus a million other dips
  • make fresh marinara sauce  (Same as the peanut butter – check the ingredients on whatever sauce you currently use.  More than likely, it has things in it to keep it on a shelf for a pretty long time, or unnecessary sugars).

It comes with a pretty cookbook and there are a ton of ideas in it.  We will be going on vacation in a few weeks, and it will absolutely be coming with us.  I just could not love it any more.  Your food just tastes so alive when you switch from using stuff that has a long shelf life to using real foods that are bursting with nutrients.  Here’s the kicker – it cleans itself!  When you’re done, you just add some water, a drop of dishsoap and run the machine.  It acts as its own dishwasher. Beautiful. Seriously, D, you are welcome to come over and check it out.

Q:Where do you get most of your produce?

A:  In my green smoothie heydey, I got all I could from Costco.  They have the best frozen blueberries around (they don’t clump together).  I also did Jerry’s or Caputo’s, or wherever was convenient.  People are always worried that it will take too much time and effort to have so much produce on hand, but it quickly becomes very addictive to be serving your family such amazing, healthy  food, and it really just becomes routine.  Now the people who used to come to my house and make fun of me that I had more produce than a farmer are bigger consumers than I ever was!  There was one funny time when Dave was buying an excessive amount of bananas from Jerry’s.  When he put them on the conveyer belt, the cashier just stared at him and he said, “I don’t know a thing about that missing monkey from the zoo.”  They both just laughed because it was preposterous.

To D&K – Thanks so much for your nice email a couple of weeks back.  It was during the power outage and I realize I never got back to you!  I loved hearing how much fun you guys are having with the recipes!  I took your recommendation and got some pink salt from Trader Joe’s today. I can’t wait to try it!  Thanks!

My kids (age 2 and 3) take a multivitamin every day and love it. They especially love seeing which dino they get. They are called Dinosaurs Supplements for Kids-Multisaurus Vitamins and Minerals. They come in a couple different flavors and to obtain their pretty pink hue, the ingredients used are red radish and red beet juice instead of the despised red 40! We buy them at Whole Foods. They are also gluten and fructose free.
