We knew they weren’t made of rainbows and fairy dust, but this seems like a bit much, even for them . . .

According to Tuesday’s Chicago Sun-Times:

“What’s in a Chicken Nugget? Don’t Ask

A St. Louis TV station wondered, What’s in a chicken nugget, anyway? About 53 percent meat, according to a St. Louis based company that conducts food-safety audits for the food-services industry.
What about the rest of the nugget? Breading and other components, a spokesman for Microbe Inotech Laboratories told KSDK.
Usually, the meat is from retired egg layers. Tendons, tissue, cartilage, organs and other chicken extras are ground up into a fine poultry paste. The paste is washed with ammonia to kill bacteria, and treated with an artificial flavoring. To get rid of the pink color, the paste is dyed.”

In Homer Simpson ‘thinking about delicious food voice’:  MMM . . . bacteria-laden, ammonia-washed, dyed leftover chicken innards . . .MMM

We knew they weren’t exactly health food, but they are quick and easy and we are tired and busy – a match made in heaven.  In today’s post, I’m going to share with you my favorite kitchen appliance that I use at least 3 times a day – to make quick, easy, healthy and fresh meals.  This was my very first step towards leading a more natural lifestyle.    I briefly mentioned it in my page “Bridget’s Story”, and now I’d like to go into a bit further – and with an exciting development.

It is the Vitamix!  The Vitamix fits several of my criteria for products I like to use:  it’s been around a long time (over 80 years), it lasts a long time (people have had theirs for decades), and it has a long list of ways you can use it to improve your health!  I’ve used it to make smoothies, soups, dips, salsas, sauces, peanut butter, hair/face masks, and the list goes on and on.  Please go here if you’d like to see what celebrities and professional chefs have to say about the Vitamix.  As I mentioned in my story, I bought the Vitamix as a way to regain my health. I began by making green smoothies, in which the main ingredients are greens (ie spinach, lettuce) whose taste is completely masked by adding fruit.

Now for the exciting development – you can now purchase them through me, and by doing so can save yourself the $25 shipping fee!!!  I’m not really sure why I waited so long to start selling these.  I’ve so passionately recommended them to people that many have been sold and friends told me I was crazy to not be on the payroll!  So now I am!  By clicking through this link you can learn more and order one, if you’d like.

Until it was discovered that several members of my family were sugar sensitive, we made green smoothies everyday.  I think that one of the reasons I initially got so healthy on them was that I was eliminating a lot of gluten and dairy  by drinking a smoothie instead of having processed cereal and milk.  Greens are insanely healthy for you and this was a simple and delicious way to sneak them into our diet.  Prior to bringing it into my home, I was a staunch avoider of all things green and healthy.  But once you start consuming them, they make you CRAVE fruits and veggies.  It’s unreal!  Green smoothies can remedy skin conditions, allergies, low energy, and the list really continues without end.  I would say that this is the predominant reason most of my friends and family bought Vitamixes themselves.  You cannot compare the capacity of this blender to a typical one, or even a food processor.  It so finely breaks down the cell walls of the greens that your body can readily absorb all the goodness they have to offer.  I miss green smoothies from the deepest part of my heart.  When we were drinking them, my kids seemed to have an impenetrable immune system and I had amazing energy – it was the best of times.  They were now getting more vitamins and nutrients in one breakfast than they had been getting all week long!  It really took the sting out of the times when they did indulge in some ground up, ammonia soaked chicken innards!  I should write menus, right?  It gave me breathing room as a parent who was sick of telling them to eat their veggies.

Then I moved on to making peanut butter.  This was after I looked at the ingredient list on our “All Natural” store-bought peanut butter.  The second ingredient was sugar.  Why does peanut butter even need sugar?  I make my own using peanuts, coconut oil and a little salt.  It is deeee-licious (and cheap)!  My next favorite things to make are salsa and tortilla soup.  I make soup at least twice a week – something that I had never even considered before I discovered this awesome blender.  I am by no means a chef, but how much skill does it really take to put the meat from a rotisserie chicken, some broth and veggies into a blender and hit the power button?  The best part is that I can mask whatever my kids don’t like by blending it into oblivion.  Belle hates onions, but when I am making my broth, I just liquefy them and she loves the taste, and doesn’t have to have any onions ;) !  The motor on the Vitamix is 2HP.  It could probably turn my dining room table into a lovely puree, if I were so inclined.  You can jam pack it full of whatever you want and it will grind it to whatever consistency you like, in seconds.  My current daily breakfast is a protein smoothie, prepared in the Vitamix.  Along with my protein powder, it is also made with coconut milk, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and even frozen broccoli (that I don’t even taste).  It is a nutritional powerhouse, it takes me seconds to make, and it is not even in the same league as the bowl of cereal I had everyday for the first thirty years of my life.  Now that we are gluten-free, the Vitamix has been an even bigger asset.  I will be posting many recipes from food to beauty products that I make in my little magic machine.

The Vitamix is an investment, no doubt about it.  You guys know that I like to do things as inexpensively as I possibly can, so to purchase one was really a big decision for us, as well.  I do not want to convince anyone that they need this machine to be healthy, because that isn’t true.  What this machine can do is make getting there a little faster and easier.  I’m a busy mom.  I like to make healthy meals for my family.  The Vitamix has a role in nearly every meal I prepare and it cleans itself!  I’d like to make a joke here about how I can’t say the same about my husband, but that makes it sound like I have to clean him, and that’s just silly.  I may have to remind him to clean himself, but he gets the job done!

Please feel free to email me with any questions, or leave a comment and I’ll try and answer it as best I can.  For my friends that already own a Vitamix, they now have one that fits under the counter – oh the possibilities!  If you don’t go through my links, make sure to add my affiliate code, so that you get the free shipping and I get some greens of my own! Here’s my code: 06-006284.

**Update** I just found out that some of you have had a little trouble ordering the Vitamix through me.  I apologize for not getting back to you sooner.  It’s a problem with an easy fix.  When you order through me, the $25 shipping fee is waived, but you MUST enter Promo Code 06-006284 in order for that deduction to take place.  That’s it.  Just a little promo code confusion.  Don’t you wish all problems were as easy to fix?!
